To be honest, the quickest thing that comes to mind is just asking a neighbour or such. Or a classified in the newspaper, which one should be careful with, as it may attract the wrong interests. I honestly learned most of my German on the job. I had some "emergency" German when I started, but since no one spoke English with me, I had to learn - "sink or swim". It is harder for some more than others, but the best way to learn is to purposely place yourself in "awkward" situations like shopping, working, etc.  This forces you to learn, but it does take a bit of self confidence. I have started learning Chinese about 5 times now, so I know what you are going through (again). I have also heard from American or English women who take their children to German playgrounds and look for mothers to talk to, which is also good for the kids to learn as well.

 

I do not know where you live, but it may help to narrow down a few people who might be interested if they know you are in or out of town, or near which village.

Hi Alan,   I'm wondering if you can help me.  Late last year, you posted a message from me on the Americans-in-Ulm blog.  I was looking for someone to practice speaking German with.  Well, needless to say, no one replied.  I've been to the Stammtisch a few times and enjoyed myself and probably will continue to go. But it's not helping me find what I want and need: someone to speak German with.  I'm not interested in doing anything that involves a group and money restrictions limit my options.  I'm just interested in meeting someone who does NOT speak English and that I can speak German with.  I've been learning German on my own, but my main obstacle is the lack of actual face to face practice.    Can you help?  Do you know anyone, that doesn't smoke, that might be interested in meeting with me to speak German?  It can be once a week or as little as once a month.  I have to believe there is at least one person in all of Ulm that would meet my search....
